It’s been a day of planning. While finishing up my presentation I took a look at the calendar and saw that my presentation day (June 3) was the same day as the Senior retreat, among other things. I’ll have to double check that, as well as reschedule with some of my teachers. I’m meeting with Mr. Clark (process mentor) either today or tomorrow for our process mentor meeting, as well as an interview for a theology project I have to finish.

Waiting on the money to show up in the bank before adding it to the PayPal, then it’s off to the charity it goes and I can officially label my project “complete.”

In the meantime, I’m looking forward to a week full of nerd time.

Rising from the Depths

After a long weekend of relaxing, I’m pretty much back to my natural way of being, which is good. Unfortunately during that state of unfocused unawareness, I didn’t notice that I was clicking the “save draft” button on my blog entries for three days (Sorry Mr. Ciancia!).

I’ve started working on my project presentation. I’ve been going to school a lot for the past few days to tie up loose ends, it’s kind of depressing because it already feels like I’m not supposed to be there anymore

Also, saw Shrek 4 over the weekend. Pretty much exactly what was expected. Wouldn’t recommend it.

Today I’m putting our cash donations into the bank. From there I’ll put them onto the PayPal account, which I’ll be able to donate directly to the charity. With that, my project will be effectively done, and all I’ll have left to work on is the school end of things. I guess that means you can expect boring updates from now on.

Really not a lot to talk about today. After seeing how the marathon went, I’m kicking myself for not doing a few things differently: I know a few more venues that I could and should have advertised on now that the marathon is over, and I think we needed more people on hand to help out. But hindsight is 20/20, so there’s really not much I can do. Maybe if we do it again in the future, I can try employing a few of the things I’ve learned.

Things are winding down as far as the marathon is concerned. A few more donations have trickled in since completion, but I don’t expect to see much more. Our total so far is $1063, which is about three times what I expected to raise. After successfully running the marathon, I’m looking forward to a few days off to recuperate from being on the brink of death.

First, I just want to say for the record that when I started this thing up, I thought we would make maybe $350, if we were lucky. We’ve just received word that there have been so many donations we are now over $1000, and even more I just got an email from the creator of commissionedcomic.com, saying he wants to link us in his blog entry tomorrow… so we may still get a whole lot more.

Tomorrow’s the day for the arts, so I’m going to need to call in a few favors from friends, as I will be somewhat busy. Hopefully things go swimmingly. Also, because of his continued support and generous contributions, we’ve named our hero in the Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker “Mr. Brown.”

The Pains of Success

If you’re following the marathon I’m sure you can tell we’ve raised $850. That’s more than three times what I thought we would raise. As far as the donation process and the marathon are going, things are great, but because so many people want to come over and help! I’m actually having to turn away people from my house because the house is too full. We’ve also gotten a noise complaint from the neighboring apartment, so my dad, who’s hosting this thing, is getting a little nervous.

To work around this, we’re implementing a “quiet time curfew” type thing. I just don’t want to have to kick my friends out of my house.

Legend of Zelda Marathon: Saving Hyrule for the Children

Children’s hospitals are stretched thin these days because resources are being allocated to medical supplies and staff training. While these are both very important things, patients do not have appropriate toys to play with during their stay at the hospital. A team of priory students is raising money to donate to Child’s Play, an organization that donates video games to children’s hospitals. Video games are a great activity for recovering patients because germs are not transfered through video games, and one doesn’t need to be physically active to play. Through working with Child’s Play, we hope to raise awareness for the plight of children’s hospitals, and show the world that video games can be used for a good cause despite the social stigma against the video game culture.

After Saturday’s test run, it’s clear we have a few things to fix before we kick things off this weekend. Art and I managed to get things mostly working by the end of the day, but we’re still coming together friday to run some final tests on all of the equipment. We had quite a few scares this weekend before we finally set up a semi-functioning rig, but it is still in dire need of some testing.

Like I said, testing will resume on Friday. There’s also murmurings that we’ll have a larger audience if we start the marathon on the weekend, specifically friday night, and play from there. While I agree that this would probably attract more people, the Prom is happening, which will occupy most of our driving staff from 5:30 to 12:00, roughly two shifts. This wouldn’t be an issue if not for the people who are able to cover that time may not be the most responsible for the job. We’re having an emergency meeting tonight to discuss and figure out what we’re going to do.

All of these unexplored issues are cause for some stress, but I’m fairly confident that we’ll have them worked out by Friday in time for the start of a marathon, and definitely in time by Sunday, when the marathon is currently slated to begin.

We have a paypal.

We have a Chipin.

And tonight, we’ll have a schedule.

All the pieces are falling into place. I’m taking a break from setting up the Ustream account to write this blog, meaning on the digital side we’re almost completely up and running. I’m ordering the video cables tonight, buying the video games via digital download, and will be borrowing the last of the equipment that I need this weekend for a test run.

The only place I’m running down to the wire is in the advertising. I’ll be sending out the first wave of emails to my potential advertising partners tonight, and then an additional tomorrow. With any luck we’ll be able to coordinate and get some ads live on the 10th, giving a 6 or 7 day gestation period for an audience of interested viewers to accumulate.
